Engaging people under the age of 40 can be difficult – whether you are looking for prospective board members or donors. This age group holds great potential, but their time is at a premium and finding a way to connect with them can be difficult. Many strategies have been suggested, ranging from using social media to creating special advisory groups. But what is the method that might work best for your organization?

Our program will explore the results of what happened when The Lakeland Foundation of Lakeland Community College took an in depth look at this issue and ways they found to connect emerging leaders with organizations in Lake County.

Several years ago, the foundation created the Next Generation Program to address what it saw as a lack of diversity – especially age diversity – on area nonprofit boards and committees and a lack of know-how and willingness to raise money among people who serve on nonprofit boards. The program brought together young people with Lake County ties (mostly under the age of 40) to learn about nonprofits, about service on nonprofit boards and about the importance of fundraising as a necessary task for board members. Once training was completed, Next Generation participants were matched with area boards and committees seeking members with the attributes these young people were bringing.

The presentation will review the program and discuss what worked well, what didn’t, what a future program might look like, and what you can do to engage this age group in your organization.
