Speaker Bios – Foundation Funding Workshop

Dave Holmes
Cleveland Lead, Foundation Center

David Holmes returned to Foundation Center Midwest last year as Cleveland Lead after serving as Senior Consultant with Cleveland fundraising firm Grants Plus. In his initial nine-year tenure with Foundation Center, Dave served in various roles including Regional Training Specialist, Interim Director of Foundation Center – Cleveland, and Director of Capacity and Leadership Development. Earlier in his career, Dave served as a Program Officer for the Stocker Foundation in Lorain, Ohio, and Director of Grants and Prospect Research at Notre Dame College in South Euclid, Ohio. He is a former board member of the Association of Fundraising Professionals, Northeast Ohio Chapter and of Joyful Noise Music School. He holds a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Pittsburgh, an MA from Villanova University, and an MLIS from Kent State University.

Donae Ceja
Curator of Programming, Women’s Network of Northeast Ohio

Donae Ceja has been a champion for community collaboration and the nonprofit sector in the greater Akron area for more than a decade.  After serving as Vice President for Community Investment at Akron Community Foundation and Senior Vice President of Community Impact at United Way of Summit County, Donae established a professional service to help organizations meet specific tactical and logistical goals. Previously, Donae held senior level positions in banking.  She combines financial acumen and human resource management experience from the for-profit sector with a deep understanding of the unique, often complex challenges and opportunities of the nonprofit world.  Donae is a graduate of Baldwin Wallace and has been honored by Women’s Network of Northeast Ohio as a Woman of Achievement and was recently an Athena Nominee.

Stephen Caviness
Program Officer, The Cleveland Foundation

Stephen Caviness joined The Cleveland Foundation in 2015 as a Program Officer on the Community Responsive Team. Prior to joining the Foundation, Stephen served six years as a Congressional Staffer in Ohio’s Eleventh Congressional District Office. In that capacity, Stephen met community needs by representing constituents’ ideas, resolving their concerns with all levels of government, and facilitating conversations with local organizations that fostered positive change in the community.

Stephen brings a wealth of knowledge to the foundation around navigating complex government systems and an understanding of how public policy influences a nonprofit’s ability to serve its clients.

Outside of work, Stephen enjoys finding ways to connect with and give back to the local community through volunteerism and service. Over the years, Stephen has actively served the Greater Abyssinia Federal Credit Union and the Cleveland Animal Protective League as a foster care volunteer. Stephen earned a bachelor’s degree in Human Ecology from The Ohio State University and went on to earn his Master of Business Administration in Systems Management from Baldwin Wallace University.

Debra Hershey Guren
President and CEO, The Hershey Foundation

Since 1990, President and CEO, Debra Hershey Guren has worked with over 220 organizations to fulfill the mission of The Hershey Foundation. During this time, over 899 grants have been made exceeding $22 million in funding.

J. Mark Sutherland
Director – Public Affairs, The Lubrizol Corporation
President, The Lubrizol Foundation

Mark is corporate vice president of global communications and public affairs for The Lubrizol Corporation and also serves as president of The Lubrizol Foundation. Having initially joined Lubrizol in 1981, he has had a variety of assignments in marketing, business management and sales management in multiple product areas and business divisions. In 2006, he was appointed to director of investor relations, where he led the company’s communication efforts with institutional investors. After the completion of the company’s 2011 acquisition by Berkshire Hathaway, he joined W.R. Grace & Co. where he served as vice president of investor relations until rejoining Lubrizol in August 2014.

Mark holds a Bachelor of Arts in chemistry from the College of Wooster and attended Sophia University in Tokyo. He received his master’s in business administration from the Weatherhead School of Management of Case Western Reserve University.

Kristen Lewis
Director, Communications and Engagement, Fairmount Santrol

Kristin Lewis is the Director, Communications and Engagement at Fairmount Santrol headquartered in Chesterland, Ohio.  In this position, Kristin is responsible for developing and executing the company’s strategic communications and brand management. In this role, Kristin also manages the Fairmount Santrol Foundation including investment allocation and fund distribution. She joined Fairmount Santrol in January 2005.

Fairmount Santrol is a leading provider of high-performance sand and sand-based products used by oil and gas exploration and production companies to enhance the productivity of their wells.

An alumnus of Ohio University, Kristin holds a Bachelors of Business Administration with a degree in Management Information Systems.   She also received her Masters degree from Case Western Reserve University’s Weatherhead School of Management in Positive Organization Development.  This internationally recognized program focuses on emotional intelligence, appreciative inquiry and transformational leadership.

Kristin is also actively involved in the community supporting organizations such as Seton Catholic School, America SCORES Cleveland and United Way Services of Geauga County.

Kristin resides in Twinsburg, Ohio with her husband, Colin and two daughters, Isabel and Lilly.
