GENERAL PURPOSE OF JOB

Salary: $100,000 annually plus benefits.

The Director of Development is a senior level position and is responsible for strengthening and expanding The Salvation Army of Greater Cleveland’s fund raising and awareness of the mission and services. With the support of the DSGC and the Advisory Board, the Director of Development will implement an advancement plan that will include major donors, corporate, business, and special event efforts.  This position reports to directly to the Divisional Secretary for Greater Cleveland Area Services.  This position also works in tandem with the Divisional Development Department serving Northeast Ohio which includes grant writing, direct mail, digital fundraising, marketing campaigns, gift planning and major giving efforts.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1.   Identify, cultivate, pursue, and retain donor support.  Evaluate donor research and giving capacity as a basis for charting directions, measuring progress, and identifying, qualifying, and developing strategies for approaching prospects for major gifts.

2.  Develop and manage a portfolio of 50-75 high net worth major gift donors and prospect donors.

3.  Work with the DSGC is developing key funding opportunities that highlights specific programs and their impact.

4.  Manage the Development budget for Greater Cleveland Area Services: preparing revenue and expense budgets and setting goals and objectives for meeting the budget needs for Greater Cleveland in consultation with the DSGC.

5.  Oversee the Director of Corporate Relations who works with area businesses and organizations to create new engagements opportunities for funding, awareness, and volunteerism.

6.  Develop strategic efforts to identify and secure new and untapped resources.

7.  Models and leads strong stewardship communications practices with board members, major donors, and philanthropic decision-makers.

8.  Ensure relationship management approaches inspire future giving through regular reports about the impact of gifts in people’s lives through Salvation Army programs.

9.  Serve as the liaison with Greater Cleveland Advisory Board members.

10.  Lead the successful planning and execution of capital and endowment campaigns, working with consultants and leadership volunteers as needed, along with internal leadership, the Greater Cleveland Donor Relations Director (DRD) and other key stakeholders.

11.  Maintain updated donor lists, donor profiles and outreach efforts in the Salesforce database.  Analyze fundraising data and prepare reports as needed.

12.  Coordinate public relations activities with Corps Officers related to fund development and community awareness.

13.  Coordinate the activities of the Development Committee.

14.  Assume other responsibilities as directed by the DSGC.

 

QUALIFICATIONS, SPECIAL SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES

1.  Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field, with a minimum of ten years of progressive fund-raising professional experience, including demonstrated leadership and a strong track record of success.  Major gifts and campaigns experience is preferable.

2.  A leader who enjoys problem solving, thinks strategically and creatively, is goal-oriented and takes initiative with good follow through.

3.  Ability to network, connect and build rapport quickly.

4.  Comfortable making donor and potential donor calls and making six figure asks.

5.  Knowledge of Greater Cleveland’s philanthropic environment.

6.  Proven creativity in approaching fundraising, along with comprehensive understanding of fundraising essentials and best practices in philanthropy.

7.  Solid analytical and strategic thinker with strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.

8.  Superior organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to work well under pressure while managing multiple activities.

9.  Ability to represent The Salvation Army to a broad range of community constituents.

10. Must have valid Driver’s License and be willing to travel regionally as needed, flexible on scheduling to accommodate donor asks and local events.
