Vocational Guidance Services (VGS) changes lives and strengthens our communities through services that educate, empower, and provide the opportunity to earn a paycheck! VGS is a highly acclaimed, successful, private, not-for-profit 501(c)(3) vocational rehabilitation agency with over 130 years of dedicated experience serving persons with disabilities or other barriers to employment. We are currently seeking to hire a Development Director to lead the agency’s development efforts. The Development Director will be responsible for performing the following duties.

With general direction from President & CEO, lead agency’s development efforts. Manage staff and volunteer development activities designed to promote annual, capital, major and planned gifts while expanding the agency’s donor base. Maintain existing development relationships and develop new agency development relationships. Significantly increase agency’s development revenue and donor base annually. Serves as a member of the agency’s Management Team.

Development:

Build and maintain donor prospect lists and relationships.
Consistently increase agency’s donor base inclusive of annual, major, planned gifts, and capital donors.
Develop an Agency Development Case Statement/Giving Proposition suitable to President & CEO and ensure that message is consistently utilized in all written and verbal communications.
Proactively work closely with members outside of the Development Department whose expertise can help improve the agency’s development results.
Work closely with President & CEO, Vice Chair Development, and Agency Directors to energize the agency’s development efforts and help foster an environment where-by development in all its forms is a primary focus of our Board.
Ensure the production and timing of all direct mail, telephone, and face-to-face appeals.
Ensure the timely submission of foundation grant proposals and reports.
Research individual donors and corporate foundation funders. Develop and maintain those relationships.
Coordinate activities to meet Development goals.
Coordinate Development related volunteer meetings and Donor Relationship meetings.
Ensure the receiving and recording of contributions, maintain accurate files and financial records.
Prepare statistical reports on the Development Program.
Ensure gift acknowledgement system that thanks donors within three working days of gift
receipt.
Utilize mailings, brochures, and individual work-ups to encourage gifts.
Develop and manage department budget.
Develop annual key results and action plans for Development, Marketing, and Public Relations.

Public Relations & Marketing:

Work with contracted PR Agency and lead all agency activities within those areas.
Ensure Public Relations works with all agency departments to promote their businesses while delivering a consistent agency message.
Work closely with Information Services Director to maximize the agency’s benefit via all web site activities.
Lead agency’s government relations efforts.

Budget:

Establish cost center based annual budgets for Annual Fund, Planned Giving, Major Gifts, Special Events, and Capital Campaign activities.
Manage income and expenses to ensure achievement of net goal targets.

Other Duties:

Prepare back-up, suitable to President & CEO that identifies and helps prepare possible placement when incumbent is not available.
Implement back-up plan, providing additional training and information to the back-up person as required.
Carry out other assignments as directed by the President & CEO.

Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree (B. A.) from four-year college or university, preferably a Masters in Nonprofit Management, English, Communications, Marketing or Sales.
Minimum of eight years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Experience in the successful coordination of direct mail campaigns, special events, capital campaigns, major gifts, and planned giving programs.
Previous supervisory experience.
Ability to communicate effectively with staff, volunteers, and donors.
Awareness of community and professional trends.
Interest in helping people with barriers to employment.
