I was very honored and proud to participate in the AFP International Conference last April in New Orleans, LA as a Chamberlain Scholar Award recipient.  I had never attended an AFP international conference and this funding enabled me to do so.  Not only did I learn very practical skills regarding my daily fundraising responsibilities, I also networked with my colleagues from within and outside of the United States.  It is really humbling to learn about how others are tackling fundraising challenges and a good reminder that we are not alone in our daily tasks – there is always a colleague willing to offer guidance, tools and support.  I came back to Cleveland with some helpful information that I shared with my team. I also was able to reconnect with former co-workers that I had lost touch with over the years.  On top of all of that – I was able to soak up the New Orleans culture for the first time in my life – and that was an added bonus.

Thank you for this opportunity!

I am so grateful to the AFP Board for the Chamberlain Scholar Award, which enabled me to attend the AFP International Conference.

It was so great to meet and network with those in our profession from all over the world. I now have new friends in Australia, the UK, and Canada! Not to mention others from around the States.

It’s so easy to get bogged down and distracted by “other” non-fundraising tasks in our jobs, as well as pressures to meet metrics, manage office politics, etc. During my time at the AFPI Conference, I was able to open my mind and look at my role critically, creatively, and left feeling truly re-energized and excited about what we do.

Great ideas were exchanged and it was fascinating to see how fundraising works and breaks barriers outside of Cleveland and outside of healthcare. I learned so much and appreciated that there is always more to be learned and applied from other industries (i.e. marketing research, social theory and the private sector) in order to do our jobs and meet our donor’s needs more effectively.

jessica maloneIt was a true privilege to attend; I really did leave more inspired and more connected to the most important parts of our work – the elevation of our missions, and a genuine love for and duty to our donors.
